Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors! #169

Welcome back to our little meme!
Last week I shared a building with you that I found in Jerusalem's Gilo neighborhood. Walking back to my car, I suddenly saw a whole row of fascinating windows, off in the distance:

Really cool looking, right? Naturally I couldn't resist going closer to get a better look - which I'll happily share with you next week :)

Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors! #168

Welcome back to your favorite little meme!

I was in Jerusalem's Gilo neighborhood a few weeks ago, at a shopping center that I often frequent. From across the street, I suddenly noticed these high windows and balconies looking at me - I don't recall seeing them before:

I have a feeling that this used to be a pretty classy building - there's a lot of attention to detail around the windows, and the balconies themselves are pretty unique. But Jerusalem stone often discolors if not tended to properly, and this seems to be the case here. I hope the inside has aged better than the outside!

Now it's your turn! Please play along with us here at Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors! Just post your photo of a window, door, or anything architectural, link here, and sign up in the widget. 52Frames - Week Six: Love Story

Here's my 52Frames shot for this week. I don't know why, but I can't seem to bring myself to photograph the cliche - when I hear the words "love story" I know I'm supposed to pose cute couples walking down the beach, hand in hand, but somehow, my brain comes up with this. I called it Story of a Broken Heart:

Oh well. I'm doing this weekly challenge for two reasons - one, to actually use my fancy camera (which is turning out to be a lot of fun!), and two, to explore and expand myself as a wanna-be photographer. I'm not sure if I'm limiting or expanding myself by taking shots like these... I just know that ever since I was a kid, I've wanted to be my own person. Even now, things that are common or popular make me a little bit nervous. So it doesn't surprise me that my photos don't look like the rest of the album. I just don't know if it qualifies as expansion or not :)

Anyway, check out the rest of the album, here! And have a nice week, everyone :)

Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors! #167

Welcome back to our little meme!

There's talk of snow again this week! I personally have a hard time believing it - just a few days ago I was comfortably wearing sandals :) But the weather is indeed much chillier than it was then, so I guess you just never know. Anyway, all this talk made me realize that I never posted any pictures of our neighborhood in the last snowstorm. Truthfully, that's mostly because there wasn't much snow to speak of, and it melted almost immediately... but still: with no further ado, here is the view from my window, just about a month ago:

Here are the statues of sheep at a park not far from my house - I really like this photo :)
Then, later that night:

The next day everything promptly turned to slush. But a day later, we got another lovely sprinkling:
I know, I know, for those of you who live in areas that actually get snow on a regular basis, this is a joke. But for us, it was a lot of fun! Please feel free to click on any of the photos, if you'd like a closer view - that last one is particularly sparkly :)

Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors! #166

Welcome back to our little meme!
Well done, all of you! You've waited very patiently since last week's teaser, when I promised you amazing hotel photos. Honestly, there are so many, I'm not even sure I should put them all in the same post... nah, I'll let you have them now. No need to be unnecessarily mean :)

The outside is actually quite modest, I'm not sure I would have identified it as a hotel had my husband not led me right to the door:

Then when you first walk in, you're greeted by these beautiful floors:
Then when you manage to pry your eyes away from the floor, you find yourself surrounded by the most intense art-deco everything...

Walk a little further in, and you find yourself in the main lobby, designed to look like an outdoor courtyard:

It looks like a lot of the hotel rooms overlook this space:

And here's this cool chandelier thing, as a grande finale:

Wow that's nice! I'm sure I can't afford to stay there, but if you're ever in Jerusalem and looking for a lovely lobby to hang out in for a little while, do check out the new Waldorf-Astoria :)

52Frames - Week Five: Greetings From

This week we were supposed to post something that was descriptive of where we live. It was my hardest challenge so far. What epitomizes Efrat, in my mind, is swarms of little kids playing in the park. But the cold weather this week pretty much kept the swarms of kids away, and during my one attempt, I found that taking photos of other people's kids in the park was creepier than I had expected :)

So I settled for a random local pretty view - a classic view of grape vines. We see these all over the place here in Gush Etzion. It's a nice photo, I guess, but I confess that it doesn't terribly inspire me... Here's hoping for better luck next week!

Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors! #165

Welcome back to our little meme!
Last week, if you recall, my husband and I were roaming around Jerusalem. After strolling through the Yemin Moshe neighborhood, and having a lovely dinner, we carried on walking a bit. Dave wanted to show me a new hotel that had been built recently, but on the way there, we found this one - isn't it pretty?
You'll have to wait until next week to see the new one - and believe me, it's worth the wait!

Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors! #164

Welcome back to our little meme!
For our anniversary, not too long ago, my husband and I wandered around Jerusalem a bit, and had dinner. We started out in Yemin Moshe, a neighborhood just outside the Old City. Yemin Moshe is a very beautiful, unique neighborhood, paved in cobblestone, but its best known landmark is its windmill:
It also has lots of pretty windows and doors, which were very intriguing to see at night:

Lovely!

52 Frames - weeks one and two

I'm participating in a weekly meme (so far hosted on facebook, hoping to move to its own website soon) called 52 Frames, and I wanted to share it with you guys here. It's a weekly challenge - each week we're given a topic, and need to photograph something that week which meets the challenge. I'm using it as an opportunity to use my Canon Rebel T3i, which has been sadly neglected, mostly out of intimidation... anyway, here are my first two submissions:

Week One - Self-Portrait

and this, Week Two - Silhouette
Go check out the site if you'd like to see some of the beautiful photographs that the participants have created! Next week is Lines - I have an idea of what I want to post, but we'll need to wait and see how it turns out... stay posted! :)

Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors! #163

Welcome back to our little meme!

So I know that I've told you that I work in the engineering department of a small factory, located on a kibbutz not far from my home. And I know that I've showed you lots of photos of the views I get from my office, which tend to be breathtaking. But the building itself is a factory, and very plain from the outside.

To send the point home, I've taken the liberty of photographing the back door of our little building, complete with some accompanying windows:

and yet, pivoting 180 degrees in that same spot, we find this lovely landscape, bravely recovering from last week's snowstorm:

Which is why I like to look out the windows as often as I can :)

Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors! #162

Welcome back to our fun little meme!
I don't know if you recall, but I once posted about a women's seminary, located on the same kibbutz as my workplace. The windows there are pretty cool!

Anyway, I've been going in to work quite early, and as I come down the road, I've noticed that as early as I think it may be, the lights always seem to be on over there! I guess they really are hard at work, studying all night long. This morning I drove a little closer than usual, to get a better view. First this, from down the road - you can see it way off in the distance, glowing greenish:
Now we're a little bit closer:
And here - I drove all the way into the parking lot :)
Impressive! The school that never sleeps.

Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors! #161

Welcome back to our little meme!
Happy Holidays and Holiday Season to all!

Here in my neighborhood, Chanuka has come to an end. But I haven't yet posted my requisite photo of our menorahs reflected in the window, so I suppose here at WWDD, we'll just have to let the festivities carry on one more week :) Here you go!

That's it for now! Have fun celebrating, no matter what it is that you're celebrating, and have a Happy New Year!

Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors! #160

Welcome back to our fun little meme!
I haven't been online much (my deep apologies to last week's WWDD players for not having time to come and see what you posted until just now) - I celebrated my birthday last week, and then my parents came to visit from overseas, and well, it's just been a little bit busy :)

But last night we had a super fun, only-in-Israel moment, as my dad nicely put it: we were at a new restaurant, and as we were finishing our meal, an announcement was made that we were all invited to light Chanuka candles together. Although we had already lit candles at home, we joined the crowd that gathered around. Everyone sang together, and then they gave out free sufganiot (jelly doughnuts) to anyone who wanted :) What fun!

To all who are celebrating - Happy Chanuka! And to everyone else - Happy Holidays, whatever and wherever they may be!
